The Japan Pavilion to Participate in Osaka Gas’s Methanation Demonstration Project Co₂ Collected at the Japan Pavilion to Be Used to Create Environmentally Friendly City Gas (E-Methane)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will exhibit the Japanese Government Pavilion (the “Japan Pavilion”) at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, with the theme of “Between Lives.”

The Japan Pavilion will participate in a methanation demonstration (*1), which is being carried out by Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. (“Osaka Gas”) as a project commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. The project involves using carbon dioxide (CO₂) to produce and supply methane (e-methane), the main component of city gas. The biogas plant located within the Japan Pavilion that generates energy by harnessing the power of microorganisms will be used as part of this demonstration, which supports the environmentally friendly production of e-methane.

Food waste can be transformed into energy such as electricity and city gas?! A portion of the CO₂ collected at the Japan Pavilion’s biogas plant will be used to produce city gas

The Japan Pavilion contains a biogas plant that harnesses the power of microorganisms to break down food waste produced at the Expo site and generate energy. At this plant, biogas is generated during the process of decomposing food waste using microorganisms, which is then used to generate electricity for the Japan Pavilion. In addition, the CO₂ generated at the same time as the biogas will be separated and こused in Osaka Gas’s methanation demonstration facility, where it is planned to be reused as city gas using methanation technology. This will help mitigate the environmental impact while making effective use of waste.

*1 This demonstration experiment will produce e-methane from CO₂ contained in biogas derived from food waste generated at the Expo site, CO₂ to be collected from the atmosphere, and green hydrogen derived from renewable energy, and use it in city gas-powered systems at the site. It is a project commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment (Demonstration Project to Build a Model for Lowering the Cost of Hydrogen Supply Using Existing Infrastructure: “Hydrogen Supply Chain Construction/Demonstration Project by Methanation Utilizing Hydrogen Derived from Renewable Energy Sources and Biogas Derived from Kitchen Waste in Urban Areas”)
